FAQs

Can I potentially clean the entire hull surface using KeelKrab?

The KeelKrab drone is able to clean up to 95-97% of the surface of a displacement hull of a sailing vessel in the range 10-24 meters and 85-87% of a planing or semi-planing hull of a motor boat in the 10-24 meter range.

Does it remove encrustations?

Our brushes are designed to remove coral, vegetation and algae without
removing the underlying antifouling which, in numerous tests in a
simulated environment, does not find any micro-metric variation before or after several passes of the drone. Regular cleaning aimed at bringing the antifouling back into direct contact with water also prevents the formation of barnacles.

How often do I need to use KeelKrab?
It depends on various factors such as the temperature and type of water, the presence of freshwater tributaries, seasonality and above all the type of antifouling chemical product chosen. Our experience suggests use with a variable frequency from monthly to quarterly.
How long does a clean take?

On average, cleaning will take approximately 2.5 square metres a minute.

10 metre boat – 1 hour

18 metre boat – 3 hours

30 metre boat – 5 hours

All timings are subject to keel condition, weather conditions and location of the boat.

Does KeelKrab remove anti-fouling paint?
Our ANCCP certified brushes, the result of countless tests on the resulting micrometry (before and after the passage of the robot) in a simulated environment (with also water analysis) confirm that KeelKrab has the utmost respect for all surfaces and antifouling classified as fixed matrix (i.e. not water-soluble in water) silicones (or silicone films) and indeed its use prolongs the useful life of the chemical product by promptly eliminating the first layers of vegetation and maintaining direct contact with the water.
Does regular use of  KeelKrab affect the anti-fouling paint?
Anti-fouling paint is a “biocide” that works most efficiently when water vigorously passes over it, when static for long period it is at its least efficient in preventing marine growth. Testing, use and testimonials from users shows that regular cleaning with KeelKrab can significantly enhance both the effectiveness and life of the anti-foul. Some users report reappointing only every 3-5 years as opposed to annually.
How much does the service cost?
Cost is calculated on hull size and frequency of cleaning and overall is not dissimilar to an annual lift / scrub and relaunch but without all the associated time and inconvenience. Significant savings can be made on prolonging the life of the anti-fouling paintwork.
